Service Industry Workers Advocates of North Carolina
There's no denying that novel virus Covid-19 (Coronavirus) is here or that it will become one of the greatest challenges we have ever faced as a nation. Travel bans have been implemented, schools and work places shuttered, and white collar employees have been asked to work from home. Wall Street and the banking systems are in a free fall, and large gatherings - from sporting events to music festivals have been cancelled or postponed. Not to mention this virus could infect at least one third the population and has a 3% mortality rate.
The thing is, while all of this is terrible, one group of people who are often overlooked during emergencies are service industry workers. These hardworking people - who serve you with a smile on their face despite the tremendous amount of financial pressure they are under - will completely lose out on their livelihood over the coming weeks, if not longer. But, how to help such a large group of people? I think we need to look at our individual communities.
